This course is intended for those students who may be learning to fly as a hobby, or who are planning to purchase their own helicopter. It is also the first step for a student on the modular CPL(H) program.
In order to gain maximum benefit from the course we strongly recommend that prior study be completed before arrival at the school. For a list of recommended reading click here for a downloadable PDF document.
There is no allocated classroom time but some may be arranged subject to instructor availability. Ideally the classroom time should be used to clarify any difficulties you have encountered in your own study time rather than teaching.
Students must complete a minimum of 45 hours of flight training (39 hours if the student holds a JAA PPL(A)) including:
- 25 hours of dual instruction which must include
- 5 hours instrument dual instruction
- 10 hours of supervised solo flight time which must include
- 5 hours of solo cross-country time including one cross-country flight of at least 100nm (185km)
The above must be flown on one(1) type of helicopter.
Student must also pass the following knowledge exams:
- Aviation Law & Operational Procedures
- Human Performance & Limitations
- Navigation & Radio Aids
- Meteorology
- Aircraft (General) & Principles of Flight
- Flight Performance & Planning
- Communications
Holders of a JAA PPL(A) need only pass exams in Aircraft (General) & Principles of Flight and Flight Performance & Planning.
Holders of a valid ICAO PPL(H), with a minimum of 100 hours as pilot of helicopters, who wish to convert to a JAA PPL(H), are required to pass the written examinations in Aviation Law & Operational Procedures and Human Performance & Limitations. Pilots who wish to obtain a Flight Radio Telephony Operators License (FRTOL) will also need to pass the written and practical test for Communications. Pilots who meet the flight experience requirements, including 5 hours of instrument instruction) will be required to complete the JAA PPL(H) skill test.
Holders of a valid ICAO PPL(H), with less than 100 hours as pilot of helicopters, who wish to convert to a JAA PPL(H), are required to pass all written examinations. Pilots who meet the flight experience requirements, including 5 hours of instrument instruction) will be required to complete the JAA PPL(H) skill test.
