In order for a holder of a JAA helicopter license to act in any capacity as a pilot of a helicopter, except as a pilot undergoing skill testing, or receiving flight instruction, they must have a valid and appropriate type rating. For example, if the holder of a JAA PPL(H) with an R-22 type rating would like to fly a Robinson R-44 without an instructor on board, they must first complete the type rating course, pass the skills test, and apply to have this new type added to their license.
Type ratings are valid for one year from the date of issue. For a type rating to be revalidated the pilot shall complete a proficiency check in the relevant type of helicopter within the 3 months immediately preceding the expiry date of the rating, and at least 2 hours (including the flight time from the proficiency check) as pilot of the relevant helicopter within the validity period of the rating.
A type rating course consists of a minimum of 5 hours of flight training, a license skills test conducted by an authorized Type Rating Examiner, and a written test.
