What services will Bristow Academy provide to help me settle in once I arrive?
Once you have confirmed your travel arrangements send us your arriving flight details (arrival date, flight number, arrival time, and the city from which the final leg of your flight will depart if not direct) and a Bristow Academy staff member will meet you at the Orlando or Sanford International airports and assist you with check-in at one of our local motels. Bristow Academy has discounted rates with several of the motels. If you are driving-in to Titusville please let us know your planned arrival date.
If requested, the business day after you arrive we will assist you to:
- Set up a bank account
- Complete any outstanding TSA paperwork (if applicable)
- Give you a tour of Bristow Academy
- Provide you with essential local information
If required we will also assist you in renting a vehicle and show you a reliable used car dealer close to the school. Once your apartment is ready to be occupied we are happy to help you check-out of the motel and take you to buy a bed as well as purchase basic housing items and food at Walmart.
I am bringing my children, what information do you have regarding local schools?
Make sure you bring the official copies of each child's school records, immunization card, and birth certificate. You will also have to show proof of legal residency (visas for foreign students). Schools require a physical by a local Florida doctor to enroll.
Public Schools are free to everyone who is a legal resident
The Brevard Public Schools web site is http://www.brevard.k12.fl.us
Public schools are divided into 2 categories:
- Where you reside dictates the school. There is a catchment area for each regular public school and they have to take you if you live in the boundary. A link exists in the above web site providing maps of the boundary areas.
- Schools of choice/magnet schools are public schools and have to follow district guidelines. Generally they have good rankings and a lot of parental involvement. They are open to anyone living within the district but you must apply to be accepted. Applicants usually outnumber their allotment, so they have a lottery or ranking system for acceptance. Some examples are Gardendale, Freedom 7 and Sculpture.
If you click on "Parents" at the top of the screen it will give you a menu of everything you need.
Students starting at Grade 3 have to take Florida and National tests every year. The schools are graded and ranked according to these statistics. On the web site, third option from the bottom, you may select different schools and compare the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) results.
Private schools: the cost of tuition would vary with school
The following link provides a listing of private schools:
Visit: http://schools.privateschoolsreport.com/county/FL/Brevard.html
The following is a very helpful web site. It has a list of schools with information and parent reviews. To compare schools, click on "Research and Compare" on the top left. Then click on Florida. You will then be able to compare by address, district or county.
